Unplanned machine downtime can cost considerable amounts of money in lost revenue. Will Darby, Managing Director of Carlo Gavazzi UK, explains how real-time monitoring, using digital solid-state relays, can help enable machine failure prediction and maximise plant efficiency.

Real-time monitoring is fundamental to better machine management. It provides constant, up-to-date information on machine performance to enable informed decisions to be made, allows trends
to be monitored as they develop, and enables a quick reaction to unplanned events. It is particularly important when a machine incorporates an automated heating process, using
a set temperature profile that needs to be maintained or else product quality could be affected.
 
Solid-state relays (SSRs) are the preferred switching component in
machine control systems because they can perform millions of cycles without breaking down. This is particularly true for temperature-controlled processes, where unacceptable temperature fluctuations can be eliminated
with the fast switching provided by SSRs.
 
Until recently, most SSRs have not had the ability to exchange data with the machine controller.
