6G: The trends you need to know

For 6G to be successful, it’s time to address current research and economic trends, says Sarah LaSelva of Emerson Test and Measurement.

The first 6G technology deployments are slated for 2030. The typical development cycle for a cellular generation is
10 years. That means that, in 2025, we’re halfway through the development cycle.

As Aesop warned in the tale
of the ant and the grasshopper, it pays to be prepared. So, although it will be another few years
before the first 3GPP standard for 6G is finished, there’s no better time to reflect on the current research
and economic trends that need to be addressed to make 6G a success.
