Module handles optical and electrical signals

HBM's EasyOptics module for the catmanAP enables users to simultaneously acquire and visualise signals from optical and electrical strain gages; giving critical help when comparing different strain gage measurements.

With optical sensor technology based on Fiber Bragg gratings the module is ideal, for example, for measurements on fibre-reinforced plastics, in potentially explosive atmospheres and on high-current and high-voltage technology components.

Fiber Bragg gratings are inscribed into fibreglass or optical fibers and can be used, for example, for strain measurement. By developing its optical strain gages, HBM has ensured that measurements are substantially easier and more convenient to complete accurately.

A major advantage of optical strain gages is that they can be arranged in series on a single fibre of glass saving users connection time and reducing weight when compared to conventional wiring.

Optical strain gages are installed exactly as electrical strain gages: once the measuring point has been prepared, the optical strain gage is positioned and bonded using traditional strain gage adhesives. No new skills are needed for installation.
