Intelligent Soft Starters Are Easily Integrated Into Control Schemes

ABB's new PST soft starter range, covering motor currents from 30 to 1,050A (in line), are claimed to be as easy to set up and operate as a mobile 'phone. Each unit has a liquid crystal display providing information in plain text, and a four-button keypad for programming. Standard settings are available for many common applications such as pumps, conveyors, mixers and crusher drives, and users can tailor their own settings with start/stop profiles, sequence starting (up to three motors), advanced warning profiles and other specific functions. PST soft starters can be connected either in line with the motor or inside the motor's delta circuit. Inside delta connection exposes the starter to just 58% of the in-line current, so a smaller starter can be selected for the application, saving money and cabinet space. The unit automatically detects the connection mode, which avoids the need for special settings. These new starters are 'Industrial IT' enabled, which is ABB's own special branding for products that can be integrated seamlessly into larger industrial or process control schemes. Bus connection is via the company's FieldBusPlug technology; the starter itself has a fieldbus-'neutral, fieldbus-independent interface that allows connection to any existing protocol within the FieldBusPlu range.
