Enhanced frameless motors match demanding machine tool spindle applications

Parker has enhanced the design of its SKW high-speed frameless servomotor series. Suitable for single and multi-spindle machine tool applications up to 21kW, the motor deploys inside the spindle and is supplied in kit form.

The revised SKW range features the use of cold PMAC (permanent magnet ac) technology. This means reduced heating in the bearings – so low dilation effect. In addition, an increased internal diameter means greater rigidity and capacity for bar stock handling in automatic (sliding head) lathes.

Despite the increase in internal diameter, the overall dimensions remain extremely compact. Multi-spindle machine tools, in particular, need motors with a small external diameter and a large hollow shaft for the bar or the tools (thus delivering greater productivity). For this reason, the SKW series has been designed as a tubular motor.

SKW motors deliver high efficiency (90-95 percent) and are liquid cooled to optimise performance. Offering a speed range up to 12,000 rpm, the motors come in four sizes (with four lengths by size). Choices include constant power from 3 to 28kW and low speed torque from 4 to 37Nm, with specific speed/torque requirements available on request.
