SKF introduces a two-in-one bearing unit for EVs and HEVs

SKF has launched a motor encoder sensor bearing unit for the electric vehicle (EV) and hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) markets, which it claims is a first for the industry.

The SKF MESBU is designed to improve the operational performance and precision of electric and hybrid electric cars, including stop & start function based on starter-alternator devices.

Delivering accurate signals for asynchronous motor control, thanks to the integration of magnetic sensor technology into a bearing, the unit also provides incremental encoder-like signal output, enabling asynchronous electric motor real time speed and direction measurement.

Other features include a flange design sensor-body, which can be integrated as part of the motor casing, and the SKF eDrive ball bearing for low friction torque when driving at high speed.
