Water-injected compressors deliver 'active' air to sensitive processes Following the re-launch of its Hydrovane range, which saw the introduction of several design innovations, CompAir continues to deliver novel solutions for compressed air users with the launch of its DH-Series oil-free rotary screw compressor, initially offered in the 15 to 37kW range. Targeted at applications requiring high-quality 'active' air (air that comes into direct contact with the products and processes it serves), the DH-Series is a water-injected, single screw compressor, featuring switched reluctance speed regulation and a compression element that delivers twelve pulses of air per revolution. During the compression cycle, atmospheric air enters the compression element and fills the flutes of the bronze single six-flute main rotor. The carbon fibre composite gate rotors engage with the flutes and form two compression chambers above and below the main rotor. The gate rotors automatically follow the rotation of the main rotor, reducing the volume in the flutes and compressing the air along the compression chambers. Purified water from the integral reverse-osmosis water purification system is injected into the compression element seals to cool and lubricate the process. When the flutes align with the discharge port, the compressed air and water mixture is discharged from the compressor element and the water is separated from the compressed air in a vessel. With only a 15°C temperature rise across the compression element, there is no need for a final air cooler, which reduces pressure losses and hence energy consumption. Indeed, CompAir claims the DH-Series to have the lowest specific energy consumption in its class.
