Heavy duty bush are 'key element' of new rock tester

ETP Hyloc locking bushes supplied by Lenze are a key element in a machine that tests rock samples under compression. This testing machine, currently working in Italy on rocks from Mount Vesuvius, uses two 130mm Hyloc bushes to lock the vertical movement on a sliding platen. In this way different sizes of samples, typically between 300 and 1200mm can be accommodated.

The ETP Hyloc is a high precision hydro-mechanical locking bush designed to replace taper and shrink-fit connections between shafts and hubs, usually on rotating shafts. In operation hydraulic pressure from an external pump is used to push a fully enclosed conical piston up a conical bore. This action produces the radial force required to lock a shaft and hub together, giving all the strength of a shrink fit but with no mess and with fast and easy removal.

Hyloc is available for shafts from 50 to 220mm. The high performance shows as high torque capacity, for example rated torque of more than 100kNm on a shaft of 150mm with standard machined finish and H7 fits.

In this case the bushes do not rotate. They allow free release and locking of the upper platen which sits on two vertical guides. The Hyloc design is also able to transmit high axial loads, in this case 830kN. Once the bush has been set by applying the correct hydraulic pressure, the connection can be released as the bush forms a purely mechanical joint without oil pressure.

The ETP Hyloc bushes from Lenze create a high integrity connection between shaft and hub that is easy and fast to remove, yet able to transmit very high torque, radial and axial loads.
