Osicoder rotary encoders combine simplicity with versatility

Designed after extensive customer consultation, to match the real needs of users, the new Osicoder range of rotary encoders from Telemecanique has only one third the number of models of the previous range, yet it provides greatly enhanced versatility. The new encoders are available on short deliveries, and the simplicity of the range makes Osicoder products easy to select as well as significantly reducing stocking and spares requirements.

Highlights of the new range include one of the few programmable incremental encoders currently available. This is an innovative 58mm diameter incremental model that allows users to select any resolution from 1x to 16x the base resolution, up to a maximum of 80,000 points. Programming is carried out using DIP switches, which means that no PC or other special programming terminal is needed.

The programming facility means that a single model of encoder can be used in many different applications. This is a big benefit not only for users, but also for distributors who now need to stock a much smaller number of products to meet the full range of customer requirements.

Also available in the popular 58mm size are absolute encoders with an integral fieldbus interface. Supplied in versions to suit either Profibus DP or CANopen, these units simplify wiring, and facilitate integration with modern bus-based automation systems.

Other Osicoder models include fixed-resolution incremental encoders with housing diameters from 40mm to 90mm, single-turn parallel output absolute encoders with 58mm and 90mm housings, and multi-turn absolute encoders with 58mm and 90mm housings. Multi-turn models have serial (SSI) outputs, and are supplied with a serial/parallel conversion cable. All models in the range are offered with solid or hollow shafts in up to three different diameters to comply with all users’ application needs.

Products in the Osicoder range are suitable for operation from DC supplies in the increased range of 5V to 30V, once again reducing the number of variants needed to cover diverse applications. Full protection is provided against accidental damage resulting from short circuits and reverse polarity.

Reliable functioning, even in difficult operating conditions, is ensured by the robust construction of Osicoder rotary encoders. Fieldbus types are shock resistant up to 100G, and all types offer IP65 ingress protection which, for 10mm solid-shaft models, can be increased to IP67 with the use of a sealing flange. In addition, the encoders can withstand a maximum load of 10N, which is typically twice that of comparable products from other suppliers, and they can be used continuously in temperatures as high as 100°C.

Fixings for the encoders comply with industry standards, allowing them to be readily fitted as upgrades or replacements in existing equipment, and all hollow shaft types are supplied complete with an anti-rotation flange. Available accessories include adapter rings to increase the diameter of models with standard shafts, and reduction rings for hollow-shaft models.
