New modules connect safety controller to Ethernet

Pilz Automation Technology is launching two Ethernet expansion modules for the PNOZmulti configurable modular safety controller for transferring data via Profinet/IO, EtherNet/IP or Modbus/TCP networks. This means that a PNOZmulti system can be easily incorporated within plants already using these protocols, with users benefiting from reduced costs and enhanced diagnostics.

As an example of the new products, the PNOZ mc8p Ethernet IP and Modbus TCP fieldbus expansion module conforms to the requirements of VDE 0113-1, 11/98 and IEC 60204-1, 12/97. It functions as a subscriber (slave) on an Ethernet IP or Modbus TCP network and communicates at both10Mbit and 100Mbit in full and half-duplex modes. An IP address can be assigned via a webpage and the unit has LED status indicators to provide on-panel diagnostics.

Using the expansion modules enables diagnostic data and other information relating to the controller to be downloaded from a PNOZmulti to a higher-level control and monitoring system via Ethernet. This reduces the amount of wiring involved, thereby saving costs for the system builder and reducing the time required for commissioning. User-friendly diagnostic options are also available, which help to reduce downtime.
A module for a separate 24V supply can be inserted between the base unit and the expansion modules to guarantee that the expansion modules have an independent supply voltage, hence increasing the availability of the fieldbus connection.

The PNOZmulti safety system is economical for both standard control functions and safety functions. All circuits are configured easily on a PC using the PNOZmulti Configurator software, which also makes it easy to carry out any subsequent modifications to the configuration.
