Royal Academy of Engineering MacRobert Award 2014 invites applications

The MacRobert Award is the UK's premier award for engineering innovation and recognises companies, individuals or teams that combine excellence in engineering with commercial success and tangible benefit to society.

The 2014 competition is now open for entries from any individual or team from companies working in the UK in any area of engineering, science, medicine or technology. Finalists will be announced publicly and the winner revealed at the Royal Academy of Engineering Annual Awards Dinner on 2 July 2014. Applications close 20 January 2014.

The winner will receive wide acclaim in the engineering community and a £50,000 prize.

This year's winner of the MacRobert Award for innovation was Cambridge-based software company RealVNC for their desktop-sharing software.

Dr Andy Harter FREng, CEO of RealVNC, said: "Winning the MacRobert Award was an incredible experience, and created a lasting feel-good factor in the company. The award recognises outstanding British innovation and business, and to receive such a prestigious honour is extraordinarily important in attracting and retaining the very best staff across the whole company."

After winning the prize, the company has continued to innovate and launched a Facebook app called Deskhop, which uses patented technology to enable people to share access to their computer screens with their Facebook friends.

Previous winners have also included the Jaguar-Land Rover team behind the Range Rover Evoque, Microsoft Research for Kinect and Inmarsat for their satellite technology that allows broadband data connectivity anywhere in the world.

John Robinson FREng, Chair of the MacRobert Award judging panel, said, "Every year the judging panel are delighted to see that British engineers keep surpassing themselves in doing what they do best, innovation.

"For the 2014 edition of the prize, once again we are looking for enterprises companies, from start-ups to large, established to show us how they are shaping and changing our every day through their work."
