Gearbox ensures fast deployment of oil-spill booms
Vikoma International recently replaced a bulky and heavy hydraulic
primary drive motor on its oil-spill containment boom deployment system
with a more compact and lightweight transmission package comprising a
small high-speed hydraulic motor and Brevini planetary gearbox. This has
had an impact on maintenance and operation. In the event of motor
failure, the much smaller unit is likely to be held as a stock item and
is considerably easier to replace, leaving the main power transmission
system undisturbed. Moreover, the geared down package provides a wider
working envelope, one that offers a wider speed range and greater
efficiency.
