40Mbps high-speed Profibus isolated interface chip.

Now available from stock from Rhopoint Components is the IL3585 galvanically isolated , high speed differential bus transceiver, designed for bi-directional data communication on balanced transmission lines. The device uses giant magneto resistive (GMR) Iso-loop technology to achieve high data rate while also offering the designer 2500Vr.m.s. Isolation in a fully Profibus compliant package.

The IL3585 offers an exceptional 2.3V differential output into a 54 Ω load, over the supply range of 4.5V to 5.5V. This means better data integrity over longer cable lengths, even at data rates as high as 40Mbps. The device is also compatible with 3.3V input supplies, allowing interface to standard microcontrollers without the need for additional level shifting components.

The IL3585 also offers the designer a typical low power consumption of 3mA at 3.3V supply. Iso-loop devices achieve their low power consumption by detecting the edge transitions of the input logic signal and converting these to narrow current pulses. This technique creates a supply current which is proportional to data rate, which has obvious advantages over optocouplers whose power consumption is dependent on mark: space ratio. The typical supply current at 3.3V is 3mA.

The IL3585 has current limiting and thermal shutdown features to protect against output short circuits and bus contention situations that may cause excessive power dissipation. Receiver inputs feature a “fail-safe if open” design, which ensures a logic high R-output if A/B are floating.

Applications include, security networks, industrial, PROFIBUS DP and FMS networks, building environmental controls, gaming systems and factory automation.
