4G mobile phone technology for M2M applications

Alpha Micro customers keen to make their M2M applications 4G capable can now embrace the advantages of 4G mobile phone technology using the new TOBY-L1 series of ultra-compact LTE modules from u-blox.

Offering 4G download speeds 5-7 times faster than its 3G counterpart, the TOBY-L1 is suitable for high-speed, bandwidth-hungry M2M applications such as digital signage, mobile health, traffic management and security system applications.

Two versions are currently available: TOBY-L100 for the USA (bands 4, 13 on Verizon), and TOBY-L110 for Europe (bands 3, 7, 20 for EU operators). Housed in a compact 152-pin LGA module, the TOBY-L1 series is layout compatible with u-blox’ SARA GSM and LISA UMTS/CDMA module series to facilitate easy product migration as well as low-cost regional adaptation of end devices.

The new series delivers ultra-fast data rates (LTE Cat. 3; 100 Mb/s download, 50 Mb/s upload) and operates from –40 to +85°C. USB drivers for Windows XP and 7 plus RIL software for Android 4.0 and 4.2 are available free of charge.

Modules measure just 24.8 x 35.6 x 2.6mm, allowing for easy mounting on any application board. Firmware update over the air (FOTA) completes the package.
