Unique fully integrated electrically-actuated handling module Ultra-fast cycle time accelerates pick & place operations Festo has launched a unique electrically-actuated handling module capable of unprecedented dynamic performance. The new HSP-AE module combines a closed loop DC motor - complete with drive electronics and programmable controller - and a precision cross-guide equipped with recirculating ball bearings to ensure fast, accurate and smooth transition. The HSP-AE is especially suitable for pick and place type operations in light assembly automation and conveyor schemes, where its speed, accuracy and compact design all contribute to making it a particularly flexible and cost-effective alternative to two-axis systems. The HSP-AE is supplied as a complete, ready-to-run system. It comprises a precision cross-guide, a high performance 24 VDC Festo MTR-DCI-HM servo motor and gearbox with an integral 500 steps/rev encoder and fully integrated drive and programmable controller, and Festo Configuration Tool (FCT) PC-based software. The motor-drive unit featuring an IP54-rated housing, can be operated in position, speed and torque control modes, and merely requires the addition of power supply and control cables. Communication interface options include 4-bit I/O and CANopen, with Profibus DP and DeviceNet to follow later this year. There are three sizes of HSP-AE handling module, to facilitate application matching. The smallest, known as the HSP-12-AE, has a Y axis stroke range of 52 to 68 mm, a Z axis stroke range of 20 to 30 mm and accommodates payloads up to 225 g. The largest model, the HSP-25-AE, has a Y axis stroke range of 130 to 170 mm, a Z axis stroke range of 50 to 70 mm and can handle loads up to 740 g.

All three models move a reciprocating backplate through an angle of 220° and have a repeatable positioning accuracy of better than 0.05 mm and 1.5mm in mid positions. The smallest model offers cycle times as short as 0.8 seconds, and the largest model is no sloth either, with a cycle time of 1.2 seconds. To place these performance figures in perspective, the HSP-12-AE can achieve a velocity of 1000°/s and is capable of handling more than 100 parts per minute - far more than any other electrical system on the market today.

The programmable controller, which forms an integral part of the MTR-DCI-HM servo motor, features a built-in LCD screen with an HMI (human machine interface). The display can be set to landscape or portrait mode, and sealed touch-pad switches enable users to enter set-up parameters or entire motion control programs directly. The controller can also be set up using the supplied FCT software - an RS232C communications port is provided on the rear of the motor unit. A teach mode is available, which allows users to inaugurate the system very quickly and easily.

Festo offers a wide range of compatible products for use with the HSP-AE handling module, including mountings for all grippers, rotary actuators etc, a choice of motor sizes, angled gear units for space-critical applications, adjustable cushioners and end-stops.
