New component drive provides trouble free installation

ABB’s new component drives in the ACS150 range, rated from 0.37 to 4 kW, usesnew technology to make it one of the easiest drives to install ever launched. Designed for machine building, the ABB component drives are intended to be stocked and dispatched by a distributor, just like other components. Ordering is made simple by the straightforward structure of the range, making selecting the right product variant and options a simple process.

ABB component drives are small, simple, low-cost drives used to control pumps, fans, gates, conveyors and materials handling equipment across a wide range of industries. They can also replace other components such as contactors and soft starters.

The range also features easy set up. ABB's patented FlashDrop technology makes parameter selection and setting as easy as operating a TV remote control. Important parameters can be quickly and safely downloaded into a drive using a hand-held FlashDrop unit. The unit can store several parameter sets. Each set can be named to show the associated end-user or application.

Parameters can be set without powering up the unit – it can even be done without removing it from its packaging. This enables distributors to configure the drive even before despatch, while allowing OEMs to streamline the commissioning process.

The integrated control panel is designed for ease of use, with a backlit LCD display and ergonomically designed keypad buttons. Motor speed can be set using the front-panel potentiometer, the most intuitive control method for many users.

The new drives are easy to install. Whatever the size of the individual drive, all products have the same height and depth. Only the width varies, meaning that the fixing holes are always on the same level and cable tunnels can be mounted horizontally. The drives can also be mounted side by side on DIN rails or with one side towards the back of the cabinet.

Supply and I/O connections are situated side-by-side at the bottom of the front panel for easy access. The connections are clearly marked and a safety function provides protection if the wiring is not implemented correctly. If power is connected to the motor terminals, the drive is not damaged; it simply shows up a fault. The control connections comprise one analogue and five digital inputs (of which one can be configured for pulse train), and one relay output.

The new component drives are available for 1-phase (200 V) and 3-phase (200 V and 400 V) operation. They are rated up to 2.2 kW for 200 V and up to 4.0 kW for 400 V.

Protected to IP20, the drive features an integral EMC filter offering low EMC emissions, while the switching frequency is optimised automatically to provide the lowest possible motor noise.
