Machined Springs Offer Simplified Assemblies

As with its wire wound brother, all types of spring format, such as compression, extension, torsion, lateral translation and lateral bending are available in the machined format. Machined springs can provide very precise linear deflection rates as most residual stresses are eliminated. In a wire wound spring, internal stresses may be present and these have to be overcome before deflection occurs. Additionally, machined springs can be offered in multiple start configurations - essentially intertwined continuous coil elements with several independent helixes in the same cylindrical plane. Another advantage of machined springs is the possibility of forming an 'assembly' as a single part. The wound spring assembly on the left in this illustration, for example, was made from four separate pieces, whereas the machined replacement on the right is just one part.
