Six important considerations when selecting the correct fitting

"You’re sure you have a spare box of pneumatic fittings somewhere. You reach into the back of your store cupboard or tool box and you think you have found the fitting that will do the job". But before you launch into using them stop and think, are they fit for purpose?

You may simply want to join two pieces of pipe or connect a system component fast but more haste, less speed!

You need to critically look at several factors that directly influence the choice.

    These are just a few of the factors that need to be addressed, always check the manufacturers data sheets for suitability. Remember reaching for what you have in stock is the simple solution, its often the attention to detail that will result in trouble free operation.

  • Tube type: is the fitting you have in your hand suitable for the tube type?
  • Fitting material: is the material suitable for the operating environment, can it cope with wash down etc.?
  • Thread type: check that the system component that is to receive the fitting is either imperial or metric!
  • Approval: does the operating environment call for industry standard approved fittings i.e. food grade or transportation suitable.
  • Pressure: can the fitting handle the system pressure without being compromised!
  • Using fittings and tubing from the same supplier to aid product traceability performance
