Semi rotary drive offers precision, stiffness and high load capacity

Festo has introduced a semi rotary drive with twin pistons that offers high precision, stiffness and high load bearing capacity.

Integrated external shock absorbers increase the maximum mass moment of inertia by up to four times compared with previous technologies. This enables higher loads to be handled with greater dynamics or a smaller drive can be specified to move the same load, saving space and cost.

The DRRD actuator combines bearing and flange in one functional element, an arrangement that ensures increased stiffness of the whole product. The rotary drive has a torque capacity of up to 110Nm and is able to rotate through 200 degrees. A mid-position feature enables the actuator to be stopped at any angle between 0 and 90°.

Rotary actuators are often sized using torque rather than inertia, but this has the potential to cause premature failure in traditional technologies with internal damping. Festo’s DRRD features external damping which enables it to turn higher loads without compromising the accuracy of the stop position.

The DRRD is available in several variants giving a choice of drive that best suits the application. Options include an end lock variant, which provides a safety function in safety critical applications, fitted inductive or magnetic sensors to offer position feedback, and IP65 sealing.
