A new user interface from Pilz Automation Technology, the PMImicro diag, is now available specifically for use with the Pilz PSS (programmable safety system) range of fail-safe controllers (safety PLCs) and the SafetyBUS p safety fieldbus.
Not only does the unit deliver diagnostic data, but it also presents the user with step-by-step instructions in easy-to-understand text message to help troubleshoot and rectify the fault. As a result, machine or process downtime is cut by up to 50 per cent and, in most cases, equipment can be restarted without recourse to a specially trained PSS or SafetyBUS p expert.
When a fault occurs, the 'PVIS' intelligent diagnostic system identifies the root cause of the fault so that the operator can immediately be instructed to rectify this, rather than being distracted by trying to remedy any knock-on effects first. Again, this ensures that the equipment is made operational in the quickest, most efficient manner.
Only current messages are displayed, so the operator is never presented with information unless it requires his prompt attention.Messages are displayed on the integral 2.8in (128 x 64 pixels) transflective, sunlight-readable graphic display that has white LED backlighting. An area at the top is normally devoted to error, warning and status information symbols, with the main part of the screen used to display the program version and up to five lines of text.
The simple, intuitive keypad has three function pushbuttons and four arrow keys for navigating around the menus and messages. One of the function buttons provides access to context-sensitive help.Text messages are defined, configured and customised using the PSS WIN-PRO v1.3.1 software that is used to program the PSS controller and configure the SafetyBUS p network.
Standard messages are predefined within the software, which means that it can be used immediately as a 'plug and play' device if desired. Multiple languages are supported, and users can switch between languages online - which is ideal when machines are being exported and commissioned abroad, and when training is taking place. An inbuilt report log function stores up to 500 events in a ring buffer, rather than using a traditional error stack.
The log can be exported to a CompactFlash card so that the data may be transferred to a PC for storage or analysis. However, by connecting an RS232 cable between the PMImicro diag and a PC, data can be downloaded and, of course, the unit's configuration and text files can be modified.
In addition, because the PMImicro diag is connected to the PSS by means of an RS485 cable, changes can be made to the PSS program at the same time (provided the user has the necessary permissions).
