Schaeffler (UK) Plain Bearings Detailed In 70-Page Design Guide

Schaeffler (UK) has produced a 70-page design guide to support designers working with the company's Plain Permaglide bearings. Plain bearings are employed where low cost, space constraints, contamination or lubrication are an issue.

To meet these needs, Schaeffler (UK) Permaglide bearings are available as bushes, flanged bushes, thrust washers and strip, and in two main types of material, P1 and P2. While the first of these grades is intended primarily for maintenance-free applications where dry running is anticipated, the second is for low-maintenance applications and requires a degree of lubrication. Specialist variants can also be provided to suit particularly demanding applications.

Schaeffler (UK) offers standard bushes in both metric and imperial sizes with plain bushes available with nominal bore diameters from 2 to 300 mm and 3/16 to 2 inches. Most sizes are listed with a choice of at least two lengths, and the main dimensions conform to the ISO 3547 standard for wrapped bushes. This makes the bearings attractive to both OEMs and engineers in the maintenance, repair and overhaul sector.

The Permaglide design guide, known as Catalogue 706, supersedes the previous version and has been completely restructured and revised. As a result, it is simpler and quicker for the user to find the information required, as well as providing for easier direct comparisons between alternative products.

There are three main sections covering technical principles, materials, and design and dimension tables. Information is presented to enable a complete bearing installation to be designed, including formulae for calculating the basic rating life for rotary, linear and oscillatory motion.

To help the user select the correct material, information is included relating to chemical and corrosion resistance, as well as characteristics such as electrical conductivity.

For non-standard applications, Schaeffler (UK) offers specialist grades of material and can assist with creating bearing designs that include intricate profiles or complex forms - including ball cups. Copies of the new Catalogue 706 are available free of charge from Schaeffler (UK).
