Compact handling module is a fast mover for light assembly

Festo's new HSP-AE handling module combines a 24Vdc closed loop servomotor - complete with drive electronics and programmable controller - and a precision cross-guide equipped with recirculating ball bearings to ensure fast, accurate and smooth transition. The unit is suitable for pick-and-place type operations in light assembly automation and conveyor schemes, where its speed, accuracy and compact design all contribute to making it a particularly flexible and cost-effective alternative to two-axis systems. The IP54 protected motor-drive unit can be operated in position, speed and torque control modes, and merely requires the addition of power supply and control cables. Communication interface options include 4-bit I/O and CANopen, with Profibus DP and DeviceNet to follow later this year.
There are three module sizes. The smallest (225g maximum payload HSP-12-AE) has a Y-axis stroke range of 52 to 68mm and a Z-axis stroke range of 20 to 30mm, while the largest (740g payload HSP-25-AE) has a Y-axis stroke range of 130 to 170mm and a Z-axis stroke range of 50 to 70mm.
All three models move a reciprocating backplate through an angle of 220o and have a repeatable positioning accuracy of better than 0.05mm and 1.5mm in mid positions. The smallest model offers cycle times as short as 0.8s, and the largest model 1.2s. To place these performance figures in perspective, the HSP-12-AE can achieve a velocity of 1000deg/s and is capable of handling more than 100 parts/min.
Festo offers a wide range of compatible products for use with the HSP-AE handling module, including mountings for all grippers, rotary actuators and so on, a choice of motor sizes, angled gear units for space-critical applications, adjustable cushioning devices and end-stops.
