Abssac was recently called upon to supply a tapered diameter coupling,
the diameter of which reduces from 20mm to 16mm over its 42mm length.
Manufactured entirely from aluminium, it is capable of rotating at speeds
up to 10,000rpm and accepts an angular offset of up to 15 degrees.
The tapered shape was deemed necessary as the coupling had to work in a
pre-designed, restricted area. Previously, a stub shaft had been used,
but this extended the design length. The tapered helical flexure added
considerably to the machine's ergonomics as well as providing zero
backlash torque transmission and constant velocity.
