Low cost, high-speed interconnection for remote Ethernet networks

The new DDW 100 from Westermo is an Ethernet extender that allows the use of existing twisted pair cables to establish a remote connection between two Ethernet networks. Using the high performance SHDSL (symmetric high bit-rate digital subscriber loop) Internet protocol, this is a cost-effective and easy-to-install alternative to fibre optic or radio systems when linking remote sites to a central industrial Ethernet network.

Due to its definition, a standard Ethernet network is limited to a 100m distance for point-to-point transmissions. In the case of higher distances a 10/100 Base TX Ethernet can no longer be used. To create a high-speed link between two distant Ethernet networks, optical fibres were previously necessary. Radio systems were a possible solution, but proved costly and difficult to implement.

The DDW 100 extender offers data rates from 192kbit/s to 2.3Mbit/s in both directions over distances of up to 10km. The DIN rail mounted, rugged unit can operate over a wide temperature range (-25 to +70oC) and features total galvanic isolation. It has an RJ-12 connector or screw terminal for the DSL line, and the Ethernet port has an RJ-45 connection, which features auto MDI/MDI-X, auto negotiation and auto polarity. The unit has redundant power options and accepts a wide dc input range of 10-60V.
