Compression limiters ensure that the elastic limit of a plastic assembly
is not exceeded when bolted together. As the bolts are tightened, the
plastic compresses and stresses within them increases until the head
comes into contact with the limiter. Thereafter, both limiter and plastic
compress at the same rate, the former absorbing additional clamping loads
without further significant compression of the plastic material. Spirol
has a range of compression limiters, including both split seam and solid
knurled designs, which it claims meets all of the criteria for successful
implementation.
The clearance between the bolt and inside diameter of the installed
limiter is adequate to meet normal misalignment, but its length and the
length tolerance are application dependent. Spirol says that the standard
tolerance will meet most needs, although it will provide engineering
support to verify this. If a 'special' is required, the company will
provide a documented recommendation.
