Powering Hand Tools In Space

Handheld power ratchet tools, which NASA astronauts used to service the orbiting Hubble telescope, were powered by lithium-ion battery packs supplied by Saft. The high power 18650 cells that make up the battery pack measure 18x6x50mm and weigh just 40gm; eighteen of them are packaged into a robust metal case that connects to the power ratchet tool via an umbilical electrical cable. The lithium technology replaces earlier silver-zinc batteries that were used on Shuttle missions. Enter 261
