Compact Soft Starters Offer Full Motor Protection

Rockwell Automation's SMC-Flex soft starter features an integral bypass, which automatically closes when the motor it is controlling reaches its nominal speed, resulting in cooler running components and consequently a smaller enclosure size. A lot of additional functions are offered, including an electronic overload that generates less heat than conventional units and features an adjustable trip class from 10 to 30. A PTC thermistor input is also provided for use with motors having thermistors built into their windings. The unit will also detect earth faults if the optional current transformer is included. Rated from 108 to 480A (94 to 831A for star/delta) in the voltage range 200 to 600V, SMC-Flex has control options including soft start, soft stop, kick start and current limit, plus a pump start and stop option for reducing hammer effects in pipelines. Fieldbus connectivity is built in, with interfaces available for most popular networks, including DeviceNet, Profibus, ControlNet and Ethernet IP.
