A diamond-like carbon coating that is not only bio-compatible, but also
offers outstanding wear resistance and a low coefficient of friction, has
been introduced by Morgan Advanced Ceramics. Suitable for prostheses,
surgical instruments and medical instrumentation packaging, 'Diamonex'
coatings are created using plasma or ion-beam chemical vapour deposition
techniques. The substrates - metal or ceramic - are at near room
temperature during the process, which avoids distortion of the product as
it is being coated. Diamonex is available in either electrically
insulating or electrostatic charge dissipating forms.
