New from Alcoa Fastening Systems, Aerospace Products division, the XPL Lockbolt fastener can be used to secure metallic, composite or hybrid structures, thanks to the novel design of the pin and collar, and a wide choice of materials and coatings. The grip range is claimed to be twice that of most other fasteners, while the locking groove design provides greater weight savings than comparable threaded fasteners. Indeed, more weight savings are possible by eliminating seal nuts and grip adjusting or self-aligning washers. A sleeved version is available to optimise load transfer in composite or hybrid structures.
