Ceramics Double Power Density Of Gearhead

Representing yet another positive step towards the goal of miniaturization, a range of gearheads with doubled power density and extended operational life is now available from Maxon Motor UK. Developed for planetary gear train applications, the bearing surfaces are made from tough, machinable zirconium oxide, rendering them virtually wear free. This ceramic material can be combined successfully with steel components, thanks to their almost identical thermal coefficients. As well as extending the life of the gearhead by between three and five, times, ceramics ensure that the same output is achieved by a smaller diameter unit. Maxon says that the power density can be increased by anything from 50% to 100%. E-mail sales@maxonmotor.co.uk
