A Motor The Size Of A Pencil Tip

The Maxon RE8 permanent magnet dc motor is only 16mm long by 8mm in diameter and weighs a mere 4g, yet it is capable of delivering a nominal power output of 0.5W. The motor features a ceramic shaft, precious metal brushes, an ironless rotor and neodymium magnet. In combination, these confer low inertia, high acceleration and energy efficiency to any application requiring a tiny drive. The RE8 can be used in conjunction with Maxon's planetary gearheads, and also fitted with an encoder, if required. Maxon says the integral Hall effect sensor should be sufficient for most speed and position sensing requirements. Typical applications include light chopping in laser-based equipment, and pump drivers in sub-miniature drug delivery systems.
