Tiny Motor Used As Generator In High Temperature Probe

At the heart of IST's (www.istimaging.com) Ventus portable high-temperature viewing and image recording probe is a Maxon super-compact EC32 80W brushless motor measuring just 6cm in length and weighing 260g. In this application the Maxon unit is directly couple to an air motor and used as a generator to power the probe's camera module and various displays. Compressed air or nitrogen is supplied to the viewing probe via a quick-release coupling to effect cooling. Some of this is diverted to the air motor, which turns the EC32, generating a three-phase voltage output. This is subsequently smoothed and regulated to provide the 12V dc internal supply.
