The job creation conundrum

“20,000 new jobs created” – but there are still questions to be asked, says Roger Haw, CEO at Sheffield-based Flame Hardeners.

Almost every week, we hear some government minister telling us about some corporation investing in setting up manufacturing activities in the United Kingdom. These announcements are usually heralded by the number of jobs it will create in both the facility and the supply chain.

The usual announcement takes the form of “this investment will result in 10,000 new jobs” (or whatever multiple of 1,000 fits the picture). It will also state the level of skill required in the jobs, and may even extend to inform us of how the successful applicants for the position will be trained.

At this point, the politician making the announcement generally disappears from any further communication on the project, moving on to the next opportunity announcement.

There appears to be little reporting on the next phase of these announcements. We cannot readily read about the controls and results from the investment. This begs the question: where do we find such information?
