Holding motion control together: Why precision couplings are becoming more critical to industry

The global market for couplings is growing steadily, as demand increases for industrial automation and high-performance power transmission, and manufacturing becomes more complex.

The growing need for precision
Industrial couplings are mechanical devices typically used to connect a driven and a driving shaft to transmit power and movement. They
allow for misalignment between the shafts, absorb shocks and vibration, and protect equipment against overload.

Higher quality, robust couplings with long lives are being sought by industries as
diverse as automotive, pulp and paper, packaging machinery, renewable energy, intralogistics, water treatment, medical devices, aerospace systems, robotics, CNC machines, mining, food processing, oil and gas, and
semiconductor fabrication. These are industries where high precision is essential, and in which couplings need to be made quickly available and bored to suit each application.

Although the
technology involved in couplings is relatively simple, precision tooling and high tolerance are very important factors in ensuring zero backlash and protecting equipment.
