Hammond’s IP68 1554 and 1555 UL-listed polycarbonate enclosure families continue to expand as sub-systems and HMI units are installed in harsh environments throughout the factory floor for local machine control and monitoring and in external locations.
As well as IP68 environmental sealing, the 1554/1555 ranges have been third-party tested for impact resistance to EN 62262, achieving an IK08 rating, undamaged after a 5J impact, equivalent to a 1.7kg mass falling from 300mm onto the impacted surface.
A further key benefit of a 1554/1555 plastic enclosure versus a metal alternative is in industrial applications that use Wi-Fi or Bluetooth for communications.
The device will be completely protected from a harsh environment within an IP68 sealed impact-resistant plastic enclosure without compromising reception or transmission performance – a metal enclosure would very likely require an exterior antenna.
Hammond has introduced a further 10 sizes of shallow enclosures: the F, 120mm x 90mm, N, 120mm x 120mm, and the R, 160mm x 160mm are available with heights of 45mm and 61mm. The U size, 200mm x 120mm, is available in heights of 17mm and 42mm.
Each plan size is available with plain, styled, clear and smoked lids. The new sizes reflect the fact that many HMI units are wall-mounted. A full-height unit will stand off unnecessarily far from the wall, and so the trend towards reduced height enclosures is obvious.
Hammond’s 1554 family is available with a solid grey, a clear or a smoked lid. Its 1555 sister family features a solid-styled lid with a recess for a membrane keypad or a label.
The 1555F range has a flanged lid to facilitate surface mounting and the base is styled to accept membrane keypads and other components.
The polycarbonate 1554/1555 IP68 sealed enclosures are available in 33 sizes from 52mm x 50mm x 40mm to 299mm x 240mm x 120mm.
The polycarbonate versions have cUL and UL 508A listing (File # E65324), and are tested to IP68 (NEMA Type 4, 4X, 6, 6P, 12 and 13).
The family is also available moulded in lower-cost UL94-HB ABS, sealed to IP66 and designed for general-purpose applications, primarily indoors.
The difference between the 1554 and the 1555 is in the lid design. The 1554 range has an opaque RAL 7035 grey flat lid or a clear or smoked flat lid on a RAL 7035 grey base.
The 1555 enclosures have a styled RAL 7035 opaque lid, with a recess suitable for membrane keyboards, labels or other I/O indicators and panel components.

The 1555F versions with flanged lidsThe 26 sizes of
1555F flanged lid versions feature styled recessed bases. They have integral flanges moulded into the
lid, which when used to secure the enclosure to a surface also prevents it from being opened without removing it from the mounting surface. There are 24 sizes from 52mm x 50mm x 40mm to 240mm x 161mm x 62mm.

Standard enclosures are cost-effective, field-proven and readily available, but they have to be configured for your
application.
Hammond’s in-house modification services bring your project to market on time and on budget.
By definition, all standard enclosures will need to be configured to suit a specific application. Hammond has many thousands of standard enclosure designs and sizes and we are able to offer modifications for orders as low as 25 units. Using Hammond, the original manufacturer, eliminates scrap and design interpretation of your requirements.
Hammond’s in-house capability:
• Precision CNC milling of holes, cut-outs, pockets, tapping and countersinking
• UV digital printing
• Silk screen printing
• Engraving of logos and text in both plastic and metal
• Pressed in hardware: nuts, studs and standoffs
• Custom aluminium extruded enclosures available in lengths up to 1m
• Custom moulding colours. All ABS, flame-retardant ABS and polycarbonate enclosures can be moulded in any custom colour subject to a minimum order quantity
• Custom painted colours – powder coating in either smooth or textured finish
