What is a supplier?

Roger Haw, CEO of Sheffield-based Flame Hardeners Ltd., asks some pertinent questions and shares his thoughts on industry’s definition and understanding of suppliers. He further explores the ‘hidden value’ they bring to the supply chain and ultimately to the quality of product manufactured.

In terms of the manufacturing industries, a supplier is a company or organisation supplying goods or services to the end producer.

The supplier may sell sub-assemblies, parts, raw materials, or specialist services. However, the position of a supplier in the supply chain is determined by the product or service that they are required to provide. Take, for example, a supplier of coatings, heat treatment services, or non-destructive testing.

Such a supplier could be applying a coating or heat treatment on a component for a parts manufacturer, who may sell the part to a sub-assembly supplier. So, this supplier would be a long way removed from the final customer.
