The German company, Magura manufactures brakes and suspension components for bikes, amongst other things. Polymer plain bearing specialist igus has developed a bearing for the "Magura Durin Race" fork suspension used in Olympic bikes. The component is made from weight-saving "iglidur J" material, which offers high wear resistance. Four of these bearings are used in the suspension and are about five times lighter than metal bearings of the same size. They recently demonstrated their ability to take constant impacts and edge loads on the Laoshan Mountain Bike Olympic Course.
Polymer plain bearings are used in many bicycle applications, offering a superior alternative to traditional metal ball bearings. Applications range from cantilever brakes, gear shift units and derailleurs to rear swinging arms and shock absorber eyes as well as seat posts, disc brakes, and pedals.
