The importance of rapid prototyping
Traditional product development cycles are often lengthy, with problems only discovered after the initial prototype is complete. Rapid prototyping solves this by enabling faster, iterative development. The process begins by defining clear objectives for what the prototype should demonstrate, whether it's functionality, aesthetics, or proof of concept.
Prototypes generally fall into four categories:
1. Engineering prototypes: Used to test functionality and performance under real-world conditions
2. Aesthetic prototypes: Focus on design and user experience, helping stakeholders evaluate the product's look and feel
3. Proof-of-concept prototypes: Rudimentary models used to test the feasibility of a concept or technology
4. Functional prototypes: Combine performance testing with key features, resembling the final product closely
