Powerspring Gets Its First Major Break

A new excavator-mounted hydraulic breaker that is significantly more powerful, quieter and nearly three times more efficient than conventional breakers, is making use of Ibex PowerSpring technology, which is available in the UK from Lee Spring. HammerTech's new breaker represents the first major application of PowerSpring, which, following a tensioning cycle, is released to pull the drop-weight down on the chisel at a speed of 4m/s. Unlike conventional breakers, which have a strike frequency of up to 2,000 blows/min, the HammerTech tool strikes just 70 blows/min, and each blow generates considerably more impact energy than a conventional tool (up to 1,000 Joules). The result is a far more efficient breaking effort, reduced noise and vibration for the operator and less wear on the chisel edge. PowerSpring is constructed from multiple rubber filaments encased in a braided cover. Tested to more than five million cycles, these tension/extension springs offer double the energy storage of normal steel springs. A 32mm diameter PowerSpring, for example, delivers 3.5kN at 90% elongation. Lee Spring HammerTech
