How sustainable is drive technology?

Lukas Schmitz, Sustainability Manager at KEB Automation, explains what sustainability means and why companies have a special responsibility towards people and nature. He also talks about the measures that KEB has already taken and why drive technology plays a key role in promoting sustainability.

How sensitive is the mechanical engineering industry to the issue of sustainability today?
Most companies are very sensitive to the topic. There are several reasons for this: on the one hand, customers are paying more attention to sustainability standards.

On the other hand, there is also a regulatory level, i.e. legal requirements that machine manufacturers must fulfil. The regulatory scope is wide and, in the worst-case scenario, non-compliance can even lead to sales bans. One of the biggest tasks for companies in this context is the collection of data on emissions of their own products. Overall, this has led to increasingly large investments being made in measures that contribute to the fulfilment of sustainability requirements.

What do you personally understand by sustainability?
For me, sustainability means creating a sense of responsibility towards the environment and society. You should always ask yourself what impact your own behaviour has on the environment. If you conclude that there are consequences that you didn’t intend, then you have to change your behaviour. However, sustainability is about more than just environmental issues: it also includes social aspects.
