The sky’s the limit: Setting our sights on the future of flight

Flying taxis, crime-fighting drones and critical care deliveries – you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d just stepped into a low-budget sci-fi movie but, according to the Department for Transport (DfT), this could be our reality by 2030…

Imagine hopping into a flying taxi for your morning commute, or receiving emergency medical supplies within minutes, straight to your doorstep. These scenarios may seem far-fetched, but they could soon become part of our everyday lives, thanks to the Government’s newly announced roadmap for the aviation industry.

Unveiled on 18 March, the Future of Flight action plan puts forward the strategic direction of the sector over the next five years, striking a balance between innovation, safety, and sustainability.

The plan sets ambitious targets, including achieving the first piloted flying taxi flight by 2026, regular drone deliveries by 2027, and autonomous flying taxi demos by 2030. If these plans prove to be successful, they have the potential to transform the way that people travel and goods are transported.
