Decentralised drive architecture delivers benefits for automated systems

Machinery and production lines that offer greater mobility and flexibility allow manufacturers to compete for more jobs, produce more customisable products, and adapt to evolving customer needs for e-commerce. It is not surprising, then, that many manufacturers are searching for ways to make their equipment and lines more adaptable and versatile.

This trend is playing out across many industries, including in manufacturing facilities and warehouse operations. Production lines and automated systems that
use adaptable, more flexible machines can be moved around as needed. Because of this shift towards modular solutions, more of these operations
are using decentralised motion and drives in their equipment and systems. 

In a decentralised architecture, the drives are located on the production
floor very close to, or sometimes even integrated into, the production machinery. This provides numerous benefits, but it’s a switch that does
require more robust components and some changes in the design process for motor and drives OEM engineers.
