Control Techniques revisited

It was during the 1990s that I first heard about inverter drives and, as a young, impressionable media rep, learnt how this piece of kit would change automation and conserve huge amounts of energy.

One of the prominent companies of that period was Control Techniques (CT) – based in a far-off place called Newtown in Powys. I vividly recall my first visit for several reasons. First of all, the drive from the Welsh border to the company site was one of the most beautiful I had ever experienced.

When I got there, I found a group of dedicated, enthusiastic engineers looking to push the boundaries and drive innovation forwards. I don’t really know what I expected, but the contrast between the beautiful rural idyll and cutting-edge technology stuck in my mind.

Since those heady days, so much has happened and the modern inverter drive has, in many ways, come into its own, with the advent of huge energy bills and the need for manufacturers to cut costs. So, what would I find as I returned once again to the beautiful Welsh countryside and the CT offices?
