Picking up bad vibrations: The efficacy of backwards engineering

Backwards engineering is a vital strategy in the engineering toolkit, especially when dealing with intricate systems where the root cause of a problem is not immediately evident. Recent work performed by Stressman Engineering to find the root cause of excessive vibrations on a Norwegian oil rig offers a case in point.

By retracing the steps from the final product back to the initial design, engineers can identify discrepancies between the intended design and the actual outcome. This approach is not only a powerful tool for problem-solving but also for innovation and improvement.

A three-month investigation into dangerous high-pressure vibrations
In a recent example, Stressman Engineering, a Norwegian firm specialising in mechanical stress analysis, was able to resolve dangerous high-pressure vibration issues with Hexagon’s pipe stress analysis solution.
