Circularity in action: Designing a sustainable low-voltage motor

Santanu Singha, R&D Sustainability Manager, and Ghanshyam Shrestha, R&D Technology Manager at ABB’s IEC LV Motor Division, highlight the tangible actions that ABB is taking to meet its circularity goals, such as its recent collaboration with partners to create a sustainable low-voltage motor.

Using sustainable alternatives at the design phase, the CO2 footprint of an IE5 Synchronous Reluctance (SynRM) motor has been reduced by 20 percent with no impact on performance.

Today, products have a finite lifespan, and when their usefulness diminishes, they are often discarded. However, this model is no longer viable in a world with limited resources.

The circular industrial economy offers an alternative approach where products are designed, maintained, and optimised to maximise their longevity. All waste is considered a valuable resource.
