Now is not the time to press pause on net zero

Picture this: you’re the Prime Minister of a G7 country. Every day brings news of the devastation wrought by climate change: extreme weather, frequent flooding, catastrophic wildfires, rapidly declining animal populations, the list goes on. By all accounts, things are looking, if you’ll allow me a little hyperbole, not great.

You’re now faced with a decision. Do you:

a) Invest in long-term sustainable solutions to protect your people and the planet

b) Continue as you have been doing. Make gradual, tentative progress towards net zero. Nothing too drastic, though – we don’t want to rush things

c) Conclude that, if anything, you’re actually doing too much and it’s time to scale back sustainability efforts. Treat yourself to a cup of tea and a biscuit, turn on your favourite post-apocalyptic film for a bit of light relief, and pat yourself on the back for all your hard work – go on, you’ve earnt it!

On a completely unrelated note, Rishi Sunak has announced plans to water down the UK’s net zero policies significantly, alleging that this will save households money.

But is this true, and what are the implications for industry’s ability to combat climate change?
