The wheel of sustainability

Sustainability is an increasingly hot topic of discussion, particularly in relation to climate change and the current economic environment. Here, Roger Haw, Managing Director of Flame Hardeners, offers a personal viewpoint for DPA readers.

Sustainability consists of fulfilling the needs of the current generations without compromising the needs of future generations, while ensuring a balance between economic growth, environmental care, and social well-being.

The types of sustainability are well publicised, these being environmental, economic, and social.

Environmental sustainability will safeguard water supply, promote efficient use of energy, and encourage recycling. Economic sustainability requires organisations to manage resources effectively for growth, whereas social sustainability seeks to strengthen the bonding of specific social groups.

I obtained most of the above information with a quick Google search. But what does it really mean for society in general, and for the heat treatment industry in particular?
