Simple steps to reduce carbon emissions and cut costs

The manufacturing industry is widely known as an energy-intensive sector, accounting for around 12 percent of the UK's greenhouse gas emissions. In recent years, however, it has made great strides to become more sustainable and resource efficient, and this forms a large part of our work at the University of Strathclyde's Advanced Forming Research Centre (AFRC), part of the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland.

At the AFRC, we work with global manufacturers of all sizes to make manufacturing more efficient, resulting in reduced energy use, materials waste, production time, and costs.

Pandemic restrictions, supply chain challenges, record-high inflation, and the energy crisis have created a shift in priorities for many of the manufacturing businesses we work alongside, with cost reduction coming into sharp focus.

Working across R&D projects from our main facility near Glasgow Airport and our outreach office in Sheffield, we have identified some steps manufacturers can take to reduce their energy consumption without breaking the bank.
