Oriental Motor expands comms – and supply – options with EtherNet/IP

Oriental Motor increases automation efficiency and broadens the supply choice with the addition of Ethernet IP driver communications for its innovative closed-loop stepper motors, the AZ Series.

Support for the most popular communications protocols means that the AZ series of closed-loop stepper motors can be used in more new and emerging applications. To further increase its integration into a wide variety of smart automation systems, Oriental Motor has introduced an EtherNet/IP driver, designed for quick and easy configuration.

The EtherNet/IP driver is specifically designed for the flagship AZ series, enabling the motors to be easily controlled via a single EtherNet/IP cable.

To meet the increasing demand for connected systems within the automation industry, integrators are typically faced with blending a variety of communications protocols as they incorporate legacy equipment into new systems. As worldwide shortages are beginning to bite, the need for a versatile motor design that can support all the major communications and control protocols is vital.

In addition to EtherNet IP, the AZ series is compatible with EtherCAT, and Profinet, CANOpen, Modubus RTU, Mechatrolink 2 and Mechatrolink 3.

Typical examples of emerging applications are automated guided vehicles (AGVs) used in warehouses. The AZ series also delivers faster acceleration and deceleration compared to an equivalent servo motor, making it ideal for AGVs’ requirements, such as short-range movements, agile turning and negotiation of ramps etc.

The AZ series of stepper-based motors do not need tuning before operation and can be used immediately. The innovative design eliminates the need for a PID (Proportional-Integral–Derivative) loop to make constant adjustments, ensuring the correct positioning. Positional accuracy is increased to 10,000 steps per revolution, or 0.036 degrees per step.

In addition to AGVs, the AZ series is ideally suited for applications approximately 750W /1HP and below; for example, conveyor systems where a belt-driven pulley is used.
