The use of AM has also moved into every phase of automotive production, beginning with prototyping and moving into the manufacture of spare parts, making small quantities and, in the last two years, producing essential parts quickly to compensate for disrupted supply chains.
However, there is a new AM technology, launched in the last 12 months, that will be even more disruptive and challenge the dominance of injection moulding. For those in the automotive industry, a faster, cheaper method of producing myriad high-quality parts – even those with unique or complex geometries – in the required volumes is now finally accessible. The new AM technology can transform existing production lines by enabling better part design and manufacturing.
